Tragedy has struck on the R33 this morning, after a road traffic accident claimed the lives of 12 people in Wartburg, KZN. The horror crash has also left two people in a critical condition, after they were rushed to hospital for further treatment.

This stretch of road in Wartburg, near Pietermaritzburg, was the scene of utter carnage on Tuesday. It’s understood that a minibus collided with a truck – thought to be an oil tanker – killing a majority of the occupants inside the taxi. Road safety agency Arrive Alive issued the following statement, confirming that the scene is still active as of 8:45 on 22 September.
“There is a crash involving a truck and minibus on the R33 / R614 near Wartburg. Reports from the scene indicate that tragically 12 people have sustained fatal injuries. Two people have sustained critical injuries and have been treated by paramedics. KZN TRAFFIC LATEST FOR TUESDAY 22 SEPTEMBER
The R33 near Wartburg has been closed off to allow police and emergency services to continue their work. Heavy traffic has also built up at the intersection with the R614.
