The MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe has resisted the illegal takeover of its Marondera party office by youths aligned to ousted MDC-Alliance president Nelson Chamisa, impeccable sources say.
On Friday evening, Womberai Nhende, the MDC-Alliance youth assembly spokesperson posted on Facebook that, “Mashonaland East province youths have taken reigns at the party office in Marondera.”
Contacted for comment, the MDC-T spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni was unavailable for comment with close sources indicating that he was at a church service since he is a devout Adventist. We however managed to speak to his aide, Joseph Chikwanha who confirmed the latest developments.
“Our vigilant provincial administrator, Wellington Makonese was able to mobilize members of the provincial youth wing who came in their numbers to repel the attempted illegal takeover of our provincial office.
“We are also thankful to residents of Marondera town who also moved in and averted this unlawful takeover of our party office .They managed to defend our office and as well as apprehend ten thugs who were part of Chamisa’s group. These thugs have since been handed over to the police,” he said.
Chikwana said this attempted takeover of MDC-T offices was linked to deposed MDC-Aliiance president Nelson Chamisa.
“We will soon retake our iconic headquarters from these fugitives who are hell bent on causing anarchy and discord in our glorious movement. We know that this marauding group is linked to Chamisa who previously threatened to violently take over our party offices,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from the Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson, Tendai Mwanza were fruitless.
Previously, the MDC-T filed for a protection order at the Marondera Magistrates Court against three councillors and other MDC Alliance officials who were threatening its provincial administrator as well as causing mayhem at the party’s Marondera offices. Sources say these are the same people who besieged and ransacked the MDC-T party offices.
