Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) Phase V: Job Opportunities for Youth in South African Schools – Now Open for Applications
The Department of Basic Education (DBE), in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), is excited to announce that applications for the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) Phase V are now open as of 22 April 2025.

This initiative, part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus, will provide over 204,676 job opportunities for South African youth in schools across all nine provinces, starting in June 2025. Supported by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as the implementing agent for stipend disbursement, BEEI Phase V builds on the success of previous phases, which created over 1.1 million job opportunities.

The BEEI leverages South Africa’s extensive network of public schools to provide job opportunities to youth aged 18–34 (turning 35 by 31 March 2026). With a school in every community, the initiative ensures inclusivity by prioritizing local youth, girls, and those with disabilities, minimizing travel costs and fostering community engagement.

Phase V allocates opportunities across provinces, funded by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and National Treasury (NT):

Roles and Responsibilities
BEEI Phase V focuses on supporting educators to improve learning outcomes, with a strong emphasis on literacy and reading. Available roles include:
- Reading Champions: Support reading and literacy in Foundation and Intermediate Phases.
- Curriculum Assistants: Assist teachers in classrooms (not responsible for teaching or assessment).
- e-Cadres: Support ICT integration in teaching and learning.
- Care and Support Assistants: Provide basic psychosocial support to learners.
- Laboratory Assistants: Support practical lessons in labs.
- Workshop Assistants: Assist with workshop-based lessons.
- Sports and Enrichment Assistants: Facilitate sports, arts, and culture activities.
- Handymen and Women: Maintain and upkeep school buildings.
All assistants will work under the supervision of a mentor and receive training to enhance their skills.
Training and Skills Development
Participants will gain both soft and hard skills, including:
- Soft Skills: Time management, communication, professionalism, reading and writing, self-confidence, and self-esteem—starting from day one with exposure to school ethos and work contracts.
- Hard Skills: Role-specific training, such as ICT integration (e-Cadres) or lab support (Laboratory Assistants).
- Inclusive Education Training: Orientation on supporting learners with disabilities, with additional training for those in special schools and assistants with disabilities themselves.
The programme also includes exit pathways, managed by the IDC, to ensure youth remain engaged and contribute positively to society after completion. More details on exit opportunities will be shared later.
Who Can Apply?
- Age: 18–34 years (turning 35 by 31 March 2026).
- Citizenship: South African citizen with a valid ID.
- Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
- Priority Groups: Youth from local communities, females, and those with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
