A crack-team in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s office on Monday arrested Harare City Council Mayor Jacob Mafume at Strathaven Shopping Centre for allegedly interfering with a key witness.
At the time of writing, Mafume was being held at ZRP Morris Depot and had not yet been officially charged.
Speaking to Zim Morning Post, Mafume said he was arrested in the parking lot of Strathaven Shopping Centre, Harare.
He said he was greeted by a person he knows who was seated in a vehicle.
“As I went towards her, I was approached by officials from SACU. They searched me and found US$65 in my pocket,” he said.
The witness was supposedly seating inside the vehicle.
Mafume could not confirm whether the police knew beforehand that the witness was inside the vehicle.
The Harare Mayor was arrested in November and recently released on bail on 8 December by a High Court judge.
It is alleged Mafume allocated residential stands to his sister Rotina Mafume and secretary at his law firm Rutendo Muvuti without following due process.
Meanwhile, Harare Deputy Mayor Luckson Mukunguma was on Sunday evening arrested for alleged abuse of office.
He was stopped on his way from Victoria Falls where he had gone on council business. He was arrested by officials from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.
