Maleme, who played the wife of Isaac Molapo and a caring mother and sister, has been a beloved part of the show, touching viewers with her powerful performances. Her real-life battle with cancer has brought her journey on House of Zwide to an unexpected and emotional close.
Her departure resonates deeply, as cancer is a devastating disease that has touched many lives, including my own family, as I lost my mother to cancer a few years ago. This illness does not discriminate, and it’s a reminder of the relentless impact cancer has on families, taking away cherished loved ones and reshaping lives forever.
Motlatsi Mafatshe, who plays Maleme’s on-screen brother Molefe, paid tribute to her with heartfelt words, celebrating their three years together on set. “From day one, we connected instantly,” Mafatshe shared on social media. “Your selflessness and dedication to your craft are awe-inspiring. You bring such realism to acting; it has been a privilege to play your brother.”
In his post, Mafatshe reminisced on the bond they shared as siblings on the show, expressing gratitude for Maleme’s unwavering support and commitment. “There are few actors like you in Africa. You make it look effortless. I’ll forever cherish our time together and look forward to the next production,” Mafatshe added, his words a fitting tribute to the actress who left a lasting impact on the show.
House of Zwide, launched in July 2021 as a replacement for Rhythm City, has captivated audiences with its high-stakes drama set in Johannesburg’s fashion world. Produced by Bomb Productions and VideoVision Entertainment, the show showcases the ambitions, rivalries, and dreams within a stylish South African family.
Alongside Maleme, the show’s cast includes acclaimed actors like Vusi Kunene, Khaya Dladla, and Winnie Ntshaba, as well as fresh faces like Olwethu Mackay and Nefisa Mkhabela, all of whom have helped make House of Zwide a fan favorite.
Matshepo Maleme’s presence on the show will be deeply missed, yet her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and vulnerability that those facing cancer embody.
