President Emmerson Mnangagwa congratulated United States president-elect Joseph Robinette Biden (Joe Biden) once again on his confirmation as the 46th US President.
This comes after the US Congress certified his victory yesterday, paving the way for his inauguration on January 20.
“I’d like to again congratulate President-elect Joe Biden on his confirmation as the 46th President of the United States. Zimbabwe is, as it always has been, ready to work together as friends and partners with the US for the benefit of both our peoples,” he said.
Joe Biden was confirmed as the 46th president of the US yesterday evening, denying Trump a second term.
However, following the certification of Joe Biden’s victory, supporters of outgoing US President Donald Trump violently invaded the US Capitol on Wednesday as the US Congress met to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College presidential victory.
According to The Herald, Donald Trump’s supporters vandalized buildings and in some cases attacked law enforcement officers as they protested against the election results. Four people are alleged to have died during the violence while 52 were arrested as the rowdy crowd attempted to block the process.
Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa, condemned the storming of the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters on Wednesday.
He argued that Washington didn’t have the moral high ground to lecture other nations on democracy as it has also failed to uphold democracy. He added that, following the US Capitol riot, the US has lost the high moral ground to punish others.
“Last year, President Trump extended painful economic sanctions placed on Zimbabwe, citing concerns about Zimbabwe’s democracy. Yesterday’s events showed that the US has no moral right to punish another nation under the guise of upholding democracy. These sanctions must end,” he said.
