South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has said South Africa is experiencing a second wave of the virus because people became careless in his country, eNCA reports. Ramaphosa said this before he tightened the lockdown restrictions:
We’ve gotten into the festive spirit early and are inviting friends and family over to get-togethers and this is what is spreading the virus. It is our failure to adhere to all these basic precautions at all times that has brought us to this second wave.

Ramaphosa went on to announce these precautionary measures in a televised address:

Stricter enforcement of current Lockdown regulations.
Sale of alcohol only on Monday to Thursday between hours of 10am to 6pm.
Alcohol consumption at public spaces including parks not allowed.
Hours of the curfew will be longer starting at 11 pm to 4 am. Restaurants will have to close at 10 pm.
KwaZulu-Natal, beaches and public parks will be closed on 16, 25, 26 and 31 December also 1 and 2 January.
Beaches in KwaZulu-Natal to be closed on the busiest holidays including Christmas Day, Reconciliation Day and New Year’s Day.
Not wearing a mask is now declared a criminal offense.
No venue is allowed to have more than 50% of its capacity
All “after tears” funeral events are now prohibited
All beaches in Hotspot areas are official closed from 16 December until 3 January – the whole Eastern Cape and Garden Route
Festival or any events at beaches are now prohibited
Garden Route District and Sarah Baardman District Municipalities have also been declared “Hotspots”.
Social gatherings and parties by young people are the biggest driver of the spread of the virus. People don’t wear masks, stand to close too each other and loosing all inhibitions due to excessive alcohol use.
All people inside a taxi MUST wear a mask
All people inside a mall or shop MUST wear a masks
All employees MUST wear a mask
Ramaphosa also noted that traveling was another reason why the country was experiencing a second wave of the virus and gave the current statistics about the progression of the pandemic in South Africa and said:
Another source of infection is the increased travel by South-Africans.
Just below 8 000 new Covid-19 cases reported yesterday.
Close to 900 000 people have now tested positive for Coronavirus but 98% of those have successfully recovered.
Only 23 000 people have, officially, died of the virus in SA.
Unallocated deaths must still be investigated because this is definitely higher than in previous years.
