‘Skeem Saam’ actress opens up after ‘death’ rumours

Skeem Saam speaks on Death Rumors, Limpopo Artists Movement Calls for Sensitivity

Lydia Mokgokoloshi, the veteran actress renowned for her role as Koko Mantsha in the soapie Skeem Saam, has expressed her distress at the recent ‘death’ rumors surrounding her. The 83-year-old actress, well-known for her part in Bophelo ke Semphekgo, revealed her gratitude for the support she received from the Skeem Saam team.

“I’m thankful that my colleagues at Skeem Saam and the Limpopo Artist Movement have stood up for me. It’s hurtful when people manipulate emotions in this manner,” Mokgokoloshi stated. She emphasized that she is very much alive and living comfortably in her home, urging people not to exploit others’ reputations for their own benefit.

These rumors emerged after @SSiTVSA claimed on Twitter that Lydia Mokgokoloshi had passed away. @SkeemSaam3 swiftly debunked this false report, emphasizing that it was not true.

In July 2020, Sowetan reported that the veteran actress had taken a break from acting, particularly her role as Koko Mantsha, due to the demanding shooting schedule. Sumanya Mogola, the soapie’s spokesperson, mentioned that they wanted to ensure Mokgokoloshi received the rest and care she needed, given her sensitive age.

Limpopo Artists Movement (LAM) chairman, Mphoza Mashabela, expressed their disappointment over the death hoax, stating that it was heartbreaking. LAM urged South Africans to refrain from spreading such distressing news, as it displays insensitivity and disrespect.

LAM’s spokesperson, Ndivhuyo Luvhengo, mentioned that they had personally contacted Lydia Mokgokoloshi and her family through a telephonic engagement, confirming that she is in good health.

This is not the first time Mokgokoloshi has fallen victim to a death hoax, as an unverified SABC 1 Facebook page also falsely reported her death in 2021. Skeem Saam had promptly dismissed those rumors as well, reiterating that “Granny is alive and well” on their Twitter account.
