Tragic Loss: Matric Students’ Lives Cut Short in Fatal Car Accident on the Way to Celebrate Last Exam

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the hopes and dreams of three matric students were shattered as they met a tragic end in a car accident on Sunday afternoon.

Luyanda Vilakazi (19), Anele Majola (18), and Thandokuhle Khumalo (18), all students at Mnyamande Secondary School in Ntendeni, Newcastle, lost their lives while returning to celebrate the completion of their final matriculation exams.

The school’s principal, Mr O.S.S Mchunu, who chose not to disclose his full name, expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of the students, emphasizing that their academic performance throughout the year hinted at a successful outcome in their end-of-year examinations.

The trio was known for their dedication to their science courses, leaving the school community mourning the loss of promising individuals.

The tragic incident unfolded on the N11 near Ngagane in Newcastle, where the students’ small car collided with a truck.

Reports indicate that one of the students was behind the wheel, driving the group to their destination, while the others were subsequently admitted to the hospital for injuries sustained in the collision.

Mrs Lethukuthula Majola, a grieving sibling, shared that her brother initially left home with the intention of enjoying a meal with friends in Esigodini.

Tragically, the plans took a devastating turn as they were later informed of the accident that occurred when the group reconvened at another bar in the morning.

Adding to the heartbreak, Mrs Nomakhaya Khumalo, Thandokuhle’s mother, revealed that she was unaware of the event as she resides in Mpumalanga for work and does not live in Newcastle. The news of her son’s involvement in the accident came as a sudden and unimaginable blow.

In response to the devastating loss, KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Mrs Mbali Frazer, visited the school and the grieving families.

She offered her heartfelt condolences and urged parents to remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of keeping a watchful eye on their children.

As the community grapples with the profound grief caused by this tragic incident, the memories of Luyanda Vilakazi, Anele Majola, and Thandokuhle Khumalo will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who knew them.

The nation mourns the promising futures cut short and extends its deepest sympathies to the bereaved families during this incredibly challenging time.
