‘Uzalo’ loses millions of viewers amidst gender-based violence storyline

The SABC 1 soapie that once had 10 million viewers, only managed 6,879, 581 million viewers in September.

SABC 1’s most-watched soapie, Uzalo has lost over a million viewers in the past five months.  

The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa has reported that the show that once had 10 million viewers only managed 6,879, 581 viewers last month (September).  

The show began losing viewers in June when it was sitting on 8,024,208 and dropped to 7,776,154 in July.  

The spokesperson for Uzalo, Nomfundo Zondi stated that the soapie is still the most-watched show in the country even though the numbers have dropped.  

“Viewers are still enjoying Uzalo. Reaching 10 million was a miracle.”

“We made history. With the interesting upcoming storyline, we believe we are going to gain more viewers.”  

GBV STORYLINE  

Legendary actor and motivational speaker, Patrick Shai, has scored a cameo role on Uzalo.  

Daily Sun has reported that Shai’s character will get involved with the gender-based-violence storyline and will make a debut on the SABC 1 soapie on 8 November.  

Shai is the founder and director of Khuluma Ndoda (Men Talk) which is an organisation that encourages men to speak out against gender-based violence.  

Zondi stated that Shai will be joining the show on a cameo role basis as the show aims to educate viewers about gender-based violence.  

“We have a storyline where a boyfriend (Njeza played by Nkanyiso Makhanya ) abuses his girlfriend (Nosipho played Nompilo Maphumulo).”

“Gender-based violence is a huge issue in Mzansi, and we had to do something about it, like the show.”  

Zondi said Shai will talk to the men of KwaMashu and plead with them to protect women.

“We hope that with this storyline, there will be a decrease in the number of gender-based violence incidents.”

Recently, Hlelo’s messy life has been exposed and how much she stands to lose. Gabisile proved to be a true friend who saw her through her worst situation.

Mbatha’s lies are brought to light, and he becomes the talk of KwaMashu. Njeza loses control of his rage and wrecks Nosipho’s belongings.

Njeza’s rage gets out of hand, and it causes panic in KwaMashu.

Sbu insists on becoming a shareholder in the business, and Gabisile experiences another challenge while calming Hlelo down. Elsewhere, the GBV case gets messier. Njeza realizes how much trouble he is in.

Njeza is not proud of the man he has become, and Patrick Shai implores the men of KwaMashu to take care of and protect their women. Everyone is excited when Hlelo finally reunites with her baby.‌‌‌‌‌

Uzalo Episode 177 – Tuesday, 9th of November 2021

Mr Mbatha prepares himself for the oncoming challenge, and Sbu finally seals the deal concerning his share in the business. Motherhood overwhelms a troubled Hlelo, and a mysterious man shows up in KwaMashu.

Uzalo Episode 178 – Wednesday, 10th of November 2021

Nkunzi talks Sibonelo out of making a dangerous business decision, and Mr Mbatha desperately resorts to dubious methods to secure his future. Hlelo comes face to face with demons from her past, and they send chills down her spine.

Uzalo Episode 179 – Thursday, 11th of November 2021

Hell breaks loose for Mr Mbatha when the people he owes come knocking at his door, and Hlelo goes out to party as Gabisile worries about her.

Uzalo Episode 180 – Friday, 12th of November 2021

MaDongwe and Madlala make up, and Njeza’s sentence is harsher than he had expected. Hlelo makes the questionable decision to take a break from motherhood, although Gabisile declares she has had enough of her recklessness.

Uzalo Episode 181 – Monday, 15th of November 2021

Hlelo promises to be a better mother to her child; however, Gabisile pleads with MaMlambo to adopt baby Smangaliso. Nkunzi announces the Talent Search competition. Njeza takes out his anger on Nonka.
