#RIP: She Was Supposed to Get Married Today, But She’s Being Buried Today. See What Happened
We are living in difficult and dangerous times, where simply waking up to see the sunrise and going to bed after seeing the sunset is something to be grateful for. These are times where, sadly, people—especially women—are being killed at an alarming rate.
As I’ve mentioned before, many of these cases involve relationships or marriages, with women often becoming victims of violence at the hands of their own husbands or partners. Sometimes, they fall prey to bitter ex-lovers who can’t let go of the past.
Today, we are faced with an incredibly heartbreaking and emotional story about a woman who was supposed to get married, but instead, her life was tragically cut short. The woman in question, Hlengiwe Mthembu, was supposed to be walking down the aisle today, on September 24, 2022. It should have been a day filled with joy, celebration, and love, but instead, it has turned into a day of mourning.
Hlengiwe left home on September 10, early in the morning, as part of her wedding preparations. She had gone out to get her nails done, a small but meaningful detail that many brides-to-be look forward to before their big day. However, she never made it back home. Her family, understandably devastated, requested that the news not be shared publicly right away, as her children were in the middle of writing exams, and the information would have been too overwhelming for them.
Days passed, and there was no sign of Hlengiwe, until a man working in the fields made a gruesome discovery. He noticed her car abandoned near some bushes and immediately alerted the authorities. When the police arrived, they searched the area with the help of sniffer dogs, and what they found was horrific. Hlengiwe’s body was discovered—burnt, her hands and legs tied together. Her life had been brutally taken away.
What makes this story even more heartbreaking is that Hlengiwe should have been celebrating one of the happiest days of her life. Instead, her family and friends are gathering for her funeral, on the very day that was meant to be her wedding. The sheer cruelty and senselessness of her death have touched the hearts of many, even those who didn’t know her personally. People are shaken by the tragedy, and social media has been flooded with messages of grief, anger, and confusion over how such a thing could happen.
As her story spreads, many are demanding justice. People are urging the authorities to investigate her husband and his ex-lover, as they suspect foul play. Some believe that Hlengiwe may have been killed by someone who didn’t want her to get married—possibly her husband’s former girlfriend, who may have been unable to accept the relationship. While the investigation is still ongoing, the idea that such a heinous act could have been committed out of jealousy is both shocking and deeply saddening. There are countless ways to express unhappiness or disapproval, but resorting to murder is beyond comprehension.
One of the most heart-wrenching responses came from the person who was in charge of decorating Hlengiwe’s wedding. She posted that she had been busy planning the décor for the ceremony, only to now find herself attending a funeral instead. It’s a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, and how quickly moments of joy can turn into unimaginable sorrow.
Hlengiwe’s death has left a void that can never be filled, and her story will linger in the hearts of many for a long time. As we mourn her loss, we must also reflect on the troubling times we are living in, where violence against women continues to rise. May her soul rest in peace, and may justice be served for Hlengiwe and her loved ones.
