Gemma is without a doubt one of Zimbabwe’s favourite female artists and one of the fast rising stars in the music industry.
Since coming onto the scene with a collaboration with Winky D last year, Gemma has been ever present. Earlier this year Gemma released the track Ndinewe that featured visuals from across the border and it was instantly a hit.
Ndinewe was followed by the track +263 more recently which features Nutty O
and Asaph. All these singles were building up to her debut project Pamwe EP. The project came out a week ago and Gemma has come out to say she spent 500 days living in her car to write music. In a post on social mediaGemma wrote:
“I lived in a car for 500 days, to write music. My EP is out now. Pamwe – meaning maybe – is the presence of possibility. It is how I wrote it – living in a Landrover, on beaches, and cities and deserts and jungle. Just being and letting the places teach me. #pamwe”
A few fans were shocked at the revelation but most simply commented on how much they appreciated the new music. Gemma has always lived life as a free spirit and that sort of lifestyle has always been part of the folk music sound. Before their collaboration +263 came out Gemma posted pictures and visuals of her and Nutty O on a hiking trip in the Chimanimani mountains.
The picturesque scenes revealed on Gemma‘s Instagram story showed that the hike was quite worth the effort. Nutty O also shared a few pictures of the two, during the hike and at the summit. In one of the captions, Gemma wrote,
“Summited Peza mountain with one of my best homies.”
It seems like she has always been home on the outdoors and whether roughing it out on hiking trails or travelling across the continent in her Range Rover, she can do it all.
At the recently held Zimbabwe Business Awards, Gemma was honoured with the Female Artist of the Year award. An honour that is sure to spark the beginning of more awards to come.
Gemma has also been a busy girl on the music as she has been working on more than just her own project. Gemma is featured on a song titled One Call Away on Ishan’s EP Bhundu Pop and she also features on Freeman’s recently released project, Freeman and friends.
Gemma was born in Cape Town, South Africa, but has spent most of my life living in Harare, Zimbabwe. The singer-songwriter studied towards a songwriting degree in the USA. Her soulful folk/pop sound is complemented by chirpy acoustic tunes and unique vocals. Gemma’s achievements in music include winning the national Eistedfodd vocal cup in Zimbabwe.
The singer also plays trumpet and piano, in which she was classically trained, as well as guitar. She performed at HIFA – Harare International Festival of Arts twice, Miombo Magic twice and played on the Main Stage of ZimFest London 2015.
