The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the community of Phahameng are mourning the loss of 30-year-old Constable Mojalefa Borolo, who was tragically killed while responding to a complaint in the township. The incident took place at approximately 5:00 PM and escalated into a violent confrontation that claimed the life of the brave officer.

Despite immediate medical intervention, Constable Borolo sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic event underscores the daily dangers law enforcement personnel face while performing their duties.

Backup units, including the Public Order Police Unit from Welkom, responded quickly to the situation. The suspects involved barricaded themselves inside a nearby residence, prompting a tactical operation. In the ensuing confrontation, all three suspects were killed.

Free State’s Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Solly Lesia, expressed his deep condolences, saying, “Constable Borolo’s sacrifice will not be forgotten.” He highlighted the dangerous conditions that police officers face and acknowledged the immense loss to the SAPS and the community.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the suspects, ensuring transparency in the police operation.

Constable Borolo’s death is a somber reminder of the risks faced by officers, and discussions on enhancing support for law enforcement personnel are expected to follow. His legacy serves as a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who protect their communities at great personal risk.
