Teenager Takes Her Own Life After Receiving Matric Results
A tragic incident has shaken the community of Orkney, North West, after a Grade 12 pupil from Vaal Technical High School ended her life upon learning that she had failed her 2024 matric exams.
Onthatile Makgale (19) hanged herself on Friday evening, 15 January, leaving her family and friends devastated.
The Day Filled With Hope
According to her parents, Onthatile left home on Friday morning excited to collect her matric results. Her father, Modiseemang Ratsie, recalled that she couldn’t wait to open the results in their presence, as she wanted to share the moment with them.
“She asked us to wait for her to come back from school so we could open the envelope together,” said Modiseemang.
However, as the day progressed, things took a turn for the worse.
A Worrying Silence
When Onthatile didn’t return home by the afternoon, her parents grew concerned. “We became worried and started searching for her. I suspected that perhaps the results were not what she had hoped for,” said Modiseemang.
Later, when her father contacted one of her friends, he learned that Onthatile had been left in town earlier that day. The friend also revealed a chilling conversation where Onthatile had asked how she would feel if she ended her life.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
Their worst fears were confirmed late that night when Onthatile’s body was found in their backyard. “She used a chair to climb a tree, and that’s where we found her. I’m heartbroken,” Modiseemang shared, struggling to hold back tears.
Modiseemang described his daughter as bright and ambitious, adding that her poor matric results were shocking and unexpected. “Her performance during the year showed no sign that she might not make it.”
A Devoted Father’s Grief
Modiseemang spoke about the close bond he shared with Onthatile, describing her as more than a daughter — she was his friend. “We spoke about almost everything, but she never gave any indication that she was struggling emotionally.”
In a note left behind, Onthatile expressed that she couldn’t bear the shame of disappointing her parents.
Police Investigation
Police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened. “At around 11:30 pm, we were called to the scene in Orkney. The body of a 19-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree. At this stage, no foul play is suspected,” she said.
A Community in Mourning
The tragic loss of Onthatile has left her family, friends, and the Orkney community in shock. Her story highlights the pressure and emotional toll young people face, particularly around critical moments like matric results.
