The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has finally spoken out following the arrest of one of its employees who was nabbed for leaking the 2020 Ordinary Level Mathematics and English papers 1 & 2 examinations.
ZIMSEC PR Manager Nichollette Dhlamini who spoke to TechZim said that Arnold Maimba was a temporary worker they had employed to ease the pressure.
Following Maimba’s arrest, Dhlamini revealed that they have since suspended the Risk Manager and Packing and Collating Manager pending an investigation into how Maimba managed to smuggle the papers unnoticed.
Dhlamini said that all security personnel at the Norton Printing Press have also been suspended and replaced due to incompetence.
The accused Maimba was arrested after images of the O level mathematics paper 2 started making rounds on Whatsapp well before the exam was to be written. He was charged with contravening the Zimbabwe School Examination Council (Zimsec) Act when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs. Victoria Mashamba.
Meanwhile, the police managed to recover all the ZIMSEC 2020 O Level Papers that Maimba had smuggled out when his home was searched. He also provided the authorities with a list of all the people that he had sold the papers to.
The police are still currently hunting down the people who bought the papers from him.
Apparently, this is not the first time ZIMSEC has been rocked by a leaking scandal. In the past, students have found themselves having to rewrite the exams after some of the exam papers would have been leaked.
