Huawei releases 5G foldable phone ahead of Apple’s big launch event
Huawei Technologies is making a determined comeback in the smartphone market with its latest release of 5G-capable devices. This follows the surprise release of the Mate 60 Pro in late August, marking Huawei’s return to producing 5G phones with in-house chips since U.S. sanctions cut off the company’s access to key technologies.
The most recent addition to Huawei’s lineup, the Mate X5, was launched ahead of a highly anticipated event by rival Apple. Both phones have garnered significant interest from consumers in China and raised concerns among U.S. authorities.
Preliminary reviews of the Mate X5 indicate that it uses Huawei’s 5G-capable Kirin chipset, which the company developed in-house. This chipset, also found in the Mate 60 Pro, is manufactured by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co. (SMIC), a Chinese chipmaker. The use of SMIC’s technology raises questions about the effectiveness of U.S. export controls in slowing China’s technological advances.
Huawei and SMIC have consistently denied allegations of national security risks and ties to the Chinese military.
Despite U.S. restrictions on Huawei, the company has maintained its competitiveness in some market segments. In the first half of 2023, Huawei had nearly a 15% share of the global foldable phone market, with shipments mainly limited to China. Apple, on the other hand, is yet to introduce its own foldable phone.
Huawei’s comeback with these flagship smartphone series coincides with questions about Apple’s future in China. Beijing has been imposing restrictions on the use of iPhones by central government employees, and these restrictions are now expanding to cover employees of local governments and state-owned companies.
While it remains to be seen whether the Mate X5 and Mate 60 Pro can challenge Apple in the Chinese market, their specifications have already caught the attention of Washington. The U.S. Commerce Department is seeking more information about the chips inside Huawei’s devices but maintains that its restrictions have been effective in curbing the company’s influence.
However, analysts warn that Huawei may still face difficulties in securing an adequate supply of advanced chips due to export controls, limiting its ability to compete globally in the long run.
