Zoleka Mandela to be dug from the grave

Some members of the Mandela family are considering legal action to have the body of Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter, Zoleka, exhumed and reburied next to her grandmother, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, according to a report in City Press.

Zoleka passed away at the age of 43 in September after battling cancer. The family had a burial plot at Fourways Memorial Park, but Zoleka was not laid to rest there due to a court order obtained by her aunt Zenani Mandela. Instead, she was buried in another section of the burial ground.

Family members are reportedly unhappy with this arrangement, believing that Zoleka’s spirit will not find peace until she is buried next to her grandmother and daughter. Zoleka’s brother, Zondwa, is leading the legal efforts to exhume her body and is expected to file papers at the Johannesburg High Court soon.

Zoleka’s funeral was also marked by controversy when a list she had written, containing the names of people she did not want at her funeral, was shared on social media. The list included the names of prominent family members, including Zenani Mandela, Mandla Mandela, Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela, and Zinhle Mandela. Some individuals on the list attended the funeral despite being named, leading to accusations of abuse by Zoleka.

Mandla Mandela, one of those named, denied the allegations and expressed shock at being included on the list.
