Rebecca Malope’s early life was marked by adversity, growing up in poverty and facing health issues that led to her being confined to a wheelchair. Despite doctors’ predictions that she would never walk again, she defied the odds and, through divine intervention, regained her ability to walk.

Raised in a less privileged family, Malope learned the importance of being a breadwinner from a young age. At 18, she and her sister, Cynthia Malope, would journey on foot from Mpumalanga to Johannesburg’s Evaton township in search of odd jobs to support their family.

Malope’s musical journey began in 1985 when she participated in the television contest “Shell Road To Fame” with her band. Although they were eliminated in the first round, she returned the following year as a solo artist and, under the mentorship of Sizwe Zako, won the competition in the Female Vocalist category.

This victory marked the beginning of her musical career, leading to a record deal with Sizwe Zako as her producer and Peter Tiadi as her manager. Together, they worked on her breakthrough pop album, “Sthembike Kuwe.” Since then, Dr. Rebecca Malope has consistently produced chart-topping hits, earning her a significant place in the entertainment industry.

In recognition of her contributions, she received honorary doctorates from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of California. Dr. Rebecca Malope’s life journey and music continue to inspire and uplift her fans and listeners.
