Lorch-Case Court Ruling Announced
Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch, aged 30, has been given a three-year suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of assault against his former girlfriend. The assault, categorized as “assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” took place in September 2020.
Lorch, who had previously pleaded guilty to serious misconduct in an internal investigation conducted by Orlando Pirates, was initially arrested in September 2020 following an incident at his residence in Midrand. The victim, Fundiswa Nokuphiwa Mathithibala, reported that Lorch became violent during an argument, physically assaulting her. She called for help, and Lorch’s friend intervened.
The National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa confirmed Lorch’s guilt in June, stating that medical evidence supported the complainant’s account. The Randburg Magistrates’ Court’s ruling was delivered on Tuesday, with Lorch receiving a five-year suspended jail sentence.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay R100,000 to People Opposing Women Abuse, a gender-based violence group. Furthermore, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm under the Firearms Control Act.
Orlando Pirates had conducted their own investigation into the matter, resulting in Lorch being charged with serious misconduct. He pleaded guilty and faced consequences, including a monetary fine and a directive to undergo anger management therapy. The club confirmed that Lorch attended the therapy, and there have been no reported incidents since then, considering it an appropriate corrective measure.
