Actress Mvelo Makhanya, known for her portrayal of Lindiwe on the eTV soapie Scandal!, has opened up about the “toxic” working environment on the show, which ultimately led her to consider suicide. After her recent departure from the long-running series, she shed light on the challenging circumstances she faced during her tenure.

Makhanya, 26, had played the role of Lindiwe for nearly a decade before deciding to leave the show in pursuit of other interests. Although there were rumors suggesting her departure was due to conflicts with her boyfriend over romantic scenes with her on-screen husband, Makhanya revealed the true reason behind her exit.

In an Instagram live stream, she expressed that she had been unfairly targeted by viewers who were unhappy with her character’s storyline and blamed her for her departure. She characterized Scandal! as a “toxic” work environment, so detrimental that it drove her to attempt suicide.

“I’ve been the one that’s been catching all the f*cken smoke … It wasn’t me guys, it wasn’t my choice. They wrote me off, that’s the truth … It was God’s plan though, I’m going to tell you that for real. I even attempted suicide, sadly, it was that bad, guys,” she bravely shared.

Makhanya clarified that her character’s fate was not her choice, emphasizing that she wanted to leave the show, and it had been a matter of prayer. She felt that her departure was a divine intervention, removing her from the detrimental work environment she endured. She emphasized the gravity of the toxicity, stating that had she stayed on the show, there was a “90% chance” she would have taken her own life.

Makhanya’s journey on Scandal! began with her role as a high school student in the Ngema household in Soweto, where audiences witnessed both her growth as an actress and her character’s evolution. Lindiwe faced numerous trials and tribulations, eventually rising to become a club owner and marrying Nhlamulo.

In a poignant storyline, Lindiwe’s character, who was pregnant, battled a chronic illness, facing a heart-wrenching choice between her baby’s survival and her own. She decided to take the risk of keeping her baby, enduring the struggles with unwavering determination.
